Wings FAQ
Why do people wear wings?
Shelley Well you feel amazing when you wear wings!! Everyone responds so positively and you get heaps of fantastic fairy feedback. Wings really make you feel special and you just have heaps of fun – it’s a bit like being a beacon of positive energy. At weddings wings really add that extra special bit of magic that so many brides are looking for these days.
How long have you been making wings ?
Shelley I’ve been making wings for about eleven years so I’ve had plenty of practice! As the business grew I just couldn’t keep up so Jason abandoned his personal training career and became a full time fairy as well. I guess he’s been making wings for about three years now. We both absolutely love it, and I guess because each pair is different we never get bored. There’s always someone with an unusual request that keeps us on our toes creatively! Recently we had a bride in the US who wanted wings with fibre optics…we’re still working on that one!
Who normally orders your wings?
Jason Gosh, anyone and everyone! You’ll be amazed at how many people want to be a fairy these days! We’ve made wings for all ages, shapes, sizes and sexes. I guess that there is a general trend towards women wanting wings, but we encourage everyone to try it out for themselves whoever they are. For one wedding we kittted out the entire wedding party including the attendant dogs! Although there is the occasional groom most of the wedding wings tend to be for brides, bridesmaids and flower girls.
What makes Fairylove wings different to other wings?
SF Well, firstly we never make two pairs the same. We believe that each pair of wings should be unique and special, just like the fairy that will be wearing them. We are totally committed to making very high quality top-of-range wings; all of our materials and decorations come from specialist suppliers and because we’re normally working with clients on a personal basis we put in a lot of time and effort into giving our fairy clients exactly what they want. Secondly we decorate both sides of the wings. This is really important because when you think about it most pictures are taken from the front, and when the holographic glitter catches the light the fairy and her wings sparkle with full rainbow colours! And the last and most important thing about our wings is that are made with lots of love and magic!
How are wings designs worked out with a client?
Shelley All of our orders come through the web site www.fairylove.com There are heaps of samples shown there as well as four galleries of fairies who we’ve helped to get their wings. Clients can usually get a good idea of shape and style from there but they can pretty much have whatever they want…we’ll give it our best shot whatever the request. We negotiate with our clients usually by phone and e-mail and often we get sent swatches of colour to colour match the wings and sometimes a client will send a drawing or design of how they want their wings to look. Occasionally we’ll e-mail pictures of work in progress; it’s great when the wings are a collaboration with the client. For our wedding wings we usually have a minimum lead time of three months.
Are the wings very durable?
The wings have a strong wire frame which is very resilient, and even if they do take a knock the wings very easily bend back into shape. We wear our own wings pretty much wherever we go and they last us for years! The only thing to be really careful with is the wayward cigarette end which will put a hole in the wings and this definitely effects fairy flight!
How are the wings attached ?
Jason Mostly we use a top quality bra elastic so that it’s easy to slip the wings on and off. The elastic is really soft so once you’ve got them on they are really comfortable to wear. I ran a half marathon in a pair of wings once-no worries! The elastic can also be dyed to match a particular dress colour. Some people, especially brides prefer our transparent straps. This makes it look like the wings are just sprouting from your back…fantastic!
Do you offer any other fairy accessories?
SF Well, you only just have to take a look in the shop to see what other fairy goodies we've been cooking up. We've got everything from fairy dust, to fairy knickers and even fairy whips!!
Where are you based and do you have a retail outlet?
JF After launching the business in Australia we relocated to the UK about 2 years ago. Fairylove is now based in the wilds of Herefordshire. We recently took occupancy of a 15th Century country house and the wing making workshops are based in an adjacent barn. Later this year we hope to be offering a whole host of different fairy activities in the house. At the outset we'll be concentrating on weekend workshops. We do have a small retail display room which can be viewed by appointment only. Apart from that we are regulars on the UK summer festival circuit and of course all our fantastic stuff is now available on-line too!
